How Rahul Srinivas and team put together Levelup Learning, an online streaming platform that currently offers courses on filmmaking, music composition and more

In 2020, during the pandemic-induced lockdown, Rahul Srinivas’s phone conversation with a college friend got him thinking. “My friend from Theni studied engineering with me, but developed a passion for filmmaking,” recalls Rahul, “so, he enrolled in a film school with the money from mortgaging his mother’s jewellery. A year later, after being passed out, he was stuck with no support system; The producers weren’t clearing his script, and he didn’t know what to do. And then, the pandemic happened. ,

That long telephone call changed his perspective. “This was an opportunity,” says Rahul, who has an entrepreneurial background, “that Indians do not have an online platform to learn the creative arts. Plus, most of the courses are entirely in English, with examples that candidates can relate to. Can’t be.”

And so, Rahul, along with a team of 15 professionals, founded a Chennai-based platform called LevelUp Learning, which hopes to enable people to learn from the best. Kickstarting this week, the current courses, which cost around ₹ 1,500-2,000, will each have around three hours of video content, featuring Kartik Subbaraj (filmmaking), G Venket Ram (photography), Anthony Gonsalves (editing), Ravi Names like Basrur. (Music Composition) and DRK Kiran (Art Direction). The courses are more entertainment-focused rather than educational, and are divided into individual short video segments, with experts breaking down the finer aspects in their area of expertise.

So, how different is this from film school? “Our biggest aim was to come up with high quality content in an affordable way, especially for those who do not have a lot of time and money to spend. This will serve as a good entry point for their passion. And so, the target group is both passionate and passionate, as Rahul says. “For people very serious about this, information and access to communities will go a long way. Those communities will be useful for not only touching base with mentors or like-minded people, but also in a latest film, the technologies used. etc. But for those who keep it as a hobby, there is a facility to access the courses whenever they are free.”
