Nutritionists tell the side effects of eating more fiber

Dieticians have been stressing the importance of consuming fiber for years. This is because a high-fibre diet can help your body in many ways. And, according to nutritionist Lavneet Batra, “A diet rich in fiber is essential to keep the digestive system healthy. It has also been associated with lower blood pressure and a lower risk of heart problems, diabetes, and obesity. There are two types of dietary fiber – soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber improves digestion and balances blood sugar and cholesterol. This fiber is found in oats, chia seeds, barley and citrus fruits. On the other hand, insoluble fiber Found in vegetables, nuts and beans. Even though fiber is healthy for the body, but according to health experts, “its quantity in the diet should be increased gradually.” Along with this, the amount of water should also be increased.

Consuming too much fiber can have several side effects:

  • Excess fiber can cause changes in bowel movements.
  • Maybe this is the cause constipation or diarrhea.
  • If you have too much fiber, you may suffer from bloating and gas.
  • You may also experience abdominal pain.
  • Fiber is a binding agent, which means that nutrients may even be eliminated before the body has a chance to absorb them, say nutritionists.

Lovneet Batra also listed some conditions under which you should avoid eating too much fiber and follow a low fiber diet. Too Much Fiber Can Be Irritating digestive tract and provoke these existing conditions:

  • IBS or irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Crohn’s disease.
  • inflammation of the large intestine with ulcer
  • Irritation or damage to the digestive tract.
  • Narrowing of the intestine due to tumour.
  • Recovery from gastrointestinal surgery such as colostomy and ileostomy.
  • Current radiation therapy or any other treatment that may affect the gastrointestinal tract.

Gut health requires a lot of care. It is important to find out what your body needs and act accordingly. Don’t get confused by the labels and try to understand your body’s reactions.
