BENGALURU: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Saturday that objections to the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) were natural.

He was addressing the media here on Saturday. Responding to a question on the strong objections raised by Congress to the implementation of NEP, he said, the government will implement NEP only after deliberation and considering the advantages and disadvantages.

Congratulations!

you successfully cast your vote

Birla said that discipline and decency are missing in Parliament and assemblies these days. A good message is to reach the masses. He said that pro-people programs should be carried out by the legislators and media should play an active role in strengthening the democratic roots. He underlined that it was difficult to schedule parliamentary proceedings during Covid, yet the proceedings were conducted successfully.

Verbal fights, shouting are okay in sessions, but members should not cross the threshold of decency, he said.

He said that on the occasion of 100 years of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, centenary celebrations would be held in New Delhi on 4-5 December.

Om Birla refused to answer the question of Congress boycotting his joint session speech held on Friday.

However, Karnataka Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri recalled that on 24 June 2002, the then Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi had addressed the legislature in the same assembly and SM Krishna was the Chief Minister then.

He further said, similar programs are being organized in Gujarat and Rajasthan also.

Kageri said, “The decisions we take, on the Speaker’s competence, are final. Objections are not valid. Those opposing it should understand this.”
