A 30-year-old woman has been arrested in Odisha’s Ganjam district for allegedly brandishing her eight-year-old step-daughter with a hot iron rod when she demanded Rs 5 from her to buy chocolates and biscuits. The incident took place on Laxmi Nursing Street in Bada Bazar police station area here on Friday.

This came to light on Sunday when the locals informed the police after seeing several injury marks on the body of the Class IV student while she was going to tuition. Bada Bazar police station in-charge Prashant Bhupathi said, “We have arrested the stepmother on the basis of a complaint lodged by the girl’s uncle.

After being rescued and treated by childline workers at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, the girl has now been kept in a child care institution as per the directions of the District Child Welfare Committee. He said the girl had injury marks on her cheek, back and shoulder.

The officer said that the accused had allegedly tried to cover up the girl’s injuries with face powder and warned her to tell anyone about the incident.
