Odisha man gives triple talaq to wife, loses money in cyber fraud

The practice of ‘triple talaq’ has been made illegal in India since 2017, despite an incident in Odisha’s Kendrapara district where a 45-year-old man allegedly committed instant ‘triple talaq’ after confessing to losing his wife. Divorced. 1.5 lakh to cyber criminals.

The state police booked the accused for giving triple talaq in one go to his 32-year-old wife. The man was booked after his wife lodged a police complaint that her husband, who is currently in Gujarat, uttered ‘talaq’ thrice on April 1 after he came to know that she had lost. 1.5 lakh for cyber fraud.

The victim has been married for the last 15 years and is the mother of three teenage children.

Inspector Saroj Kumar Sahu of Kendrapara Sadar police station said that the police have registered a case against the accused under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act.

As per the Act, the offense invites imprisonment of up to three years. Besides this, the police also registered various sections of IPC and Dowry Prevention Act after the woman complained that she was also subjected to dowry-related harassment.

However, the details of how the woman lost her money at the hands of cyber criminals are not yet clear.

Earlier in 2017, the Supreme Court had banned the controversial practice of instant talaq, setting it aside on several grounds, including that it was against the core tenets of the Holy Quran and a violation of the Islamic law Shariat.
