Odisha reports India’s second omicron death

Odisha on Thursday reported its first and the country’s second omicron-related death. The Union Health Ministry on Wednesday confirmed the first death due to the omicron version of COVID-19 in Rajasthan.

The first omicron death in Odisha was confirmed by Dr. Snehlata Sahu, CDMO, Balangir. The deceased 50-year-old woman was suffering from brain stroke. He was admitted to Burla Medical College where he tested COVID positive. He passed away on December 27, 2021.

His sample was sent for genome sequencing. The report of the investigation that came after his death came Omicron positive.

Sahu further said that after learning of Omicron’s death, the district administration and health department reached his native village Agalpur for contact tracing. Further testing of the contacts is underway.
