Odisha to expedite construction of hockey stadium ahead of World Cup

Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium will be the largest hockey stadium in India with a capacity of over 20,000 and will co-host the 2023 Men’s Hockey World Cup.

The Odisha government on Friday directed officials to expedite the construction work of the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium, which will host the Men’s Hockey World Cup next year.

Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra along with the high level team reached Rourkela in the morning to review the progress of the ongoing work in the stadium and other development projects in the BPUT campus.

The sports facility, which will be India’s largest hockey stadium with a capacity of over 20,000, will co-host the 2023 Men’s Hockey World Cup along with the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

The Chief Minister’s Office said the team advised the officials to expedite the work for timely completion of the project.

Development projects like Smart City, Traffic Command Centre, Tribal Museum, Convention Hall and Market Complex are also being expedited. The CMO said that road construction and city beautification work is going on on a war footing before the World Cup.

The Sports Department said that besides practice turf, advanced fitness center and floodlights, an astroturf would be laid as per International Hockey Federation standards.

The high level delegation also reviewed the progress of transformation at Udit Nagar High School and cold storage at VSS Market Complex, directing the officials to complete the projects within the stipulated time.
