Omicron: UK’s Omicron cases rise 50 per cent in one day – Times of India

London: Another 86 cases omicron COVID version has been reported in Britain, taking the total to 246, British health officials confirmed on Sunday.
This compares to a total of 160 on Saturday, which is an increase of over 50 percent according to UK Health Protection Agency (UKHSA).
Britain recorded 43,992 new Covid-19 infections, according to official figures released on Sunday, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 10,464,389.
The country also reported 54 more coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in the UK now stands at 145,605. These figures only include deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test.
The latest data came as British Health Secretary Sajid Javid said all international arrivals to the UK, including children over the age of 12, would be required to undergo pre-departure testing from 0400 GMT on Tuesday. He said they should be taken a maximum of 48 hours before departure.
In addition, from 0400 GMT on Monday, 6 December, Nigeria will be on the red travel list. It joins several southern African countries that were hooked on it late last month after the Omicron variant was first detected.
“I think it’s not too late to make a physical difference to the course of the omicron wave if we’re going to be one,” Prof. Mark Woolhouse, a member of Scientific Epidemic Influenza Group On Modeling (Spi-M), Told BBC When asked about the new travel rules.
According to the latest figures, over 88 per cent of people aged 12 and over in the UK have received their first dose of vaccine and about 81 per cent have received both doses. More than 35 percent have received booster jabs or a third dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
To bring life back to normalcy, countries such as Britain, China, Germany, Russia and the United States are racing against time to develop vaccines for the coronavirus.
