On being a part of Rang De Basanti, R. Madhavan: ‘Very exciting for me for nine minutes’

R. Madhavan has always won hearts which is a brilliant performance. One of his films that still stands today is ‘Rang De Basanti’. His dialogue from the film that emphasized being a catalyst of change rather than commenting and talking about problems, managed to awaken a generation that was dormant. However, for Madhavan, Rang De Basanti remained interesting due to his brief stint in the film for only 9 minutes.

Madhavan had revealed during a fun banter with Tanmay Bhatt while promoting his film, Rocketry – The Nambi Effect, “Rang De Basanti was just valid, nine minutes was too exciting for me.” The actor jokingly answered the question whether he has seen the second part of the much-loved film.

In an earlier interview with The Film Companion, the actor, who is known for his iconic roles in films like Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein and Guru, talks in great detail about how he played the nine-minute-long role. How did it work for eight days? He had shared, “I was supposed to do the role of Siddharth, but I couldn’t because I had long hair, and ended up playing the pilot.”

The actor further elaborated that the prominence of a character is determined by how that character was perceived, written and presented. He said, “Big revelation in my life, because even now when they talk about Rang De Basanti, my name is synonymous with that film, for the nine-minute presence. And this gentleman, who worked so hard for a year and a half.” Key, and I only worked eight days, I guess. And I realized that in terms of being recognized as a character, immortality depends on how you play that character, and how that character written and presented.

On the professional front, R Madhavan made his directorial debut with Rocketry: The Nambi Effect. The biographical drama film depicts the life of Nambi Narayanan, played by Indian Space Research Organization scientist Madhavan, who was an accused in the ISRO espionage case and was later acquitted. The story spans Narayanan’s days as a graduate student at Princeton University, before exploring his work as a scientist and the false espionage charges leveled against him.

The film performed well at the box office and received favorable reviews. Apart from this, the 3 Idiots actor also has ‘Dhokha Round D Corner’ and ‘American Pandit’ in his kitty.
