On first day of Congress’s Raipur session, Kharge calls for nationwide caste census

Raipur: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday called for a nationwide caste census as the party’s 85th plenary session began.

Addressing the subject committee of the plenary session, Kharge said that caste census is mandatory.

According to Congress general secretary in-charge Jairam Ramesh, the party president made the remarks during his 10-12-minute inaugural address at the beginning of the 130-member subject committee meeting.

“The Congress President in his address today said that caste-based census is very important. This is an important step for social justice and social empowerment. The Prime Minister is silent on caste-based census, but we are talking about this issue in our meeting. Ramesh told reporters after the meeting.

He said this was the party’s demand till the 2024 elections. “According to me there is no value of census in any one state.”
