On this day in 1965: The India and Pakistan Armistice went into effect ending the Indo-Pakistani War

Encouraged by the results of the 1962 Indo-China conflict, Pakistan tried to find a solution to the Kashmir problem with a military confrontation with India in 1965, but it ended with an Indian victory and a ceasefire agreement between the two countries on 23 September. Done. 1965.

The Pakistani army was then ahead of the Indian counterpart in terms of armour, artillery, airpower and used this opportunity to assert its claim on the Kashmir Valley. The conflict over the claims of territorial boundaries began in early 1965 and things slowly started to escalate. In August, hostilities escalated to an intense level after Pakistan tried to claim Kashmir by force, however, their intention was crushed by the brave Indian Army.

The hostile situation between the two countries in South Asia attracted the attention of the international community and the United Nations called on both countries to resolve the Kashmir problem through dialogue. The United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 211 on September 20, 1965, urging countries to come together for dialogue. The United States and the UK lent their support to the proposal and immediately cut arms supplies to both countries.

The impact of the decision was felt immediately upon the confrontation, particularly with Pakistan’s dependence on the US for ammunition supplies. Both India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire agreement which came into force on 23 September.

Later, India and Pakistan sat down for talks in Tashkent, mediated by the Soviet Union. Finally, in January 1966, both sides agreed to give up territorial claims and withdraw their forces. While the Tashkent Agreement achieved its short-lived objective of ending the conflict in South Asia, the conflict soon resumed in 1971 and has now continued for decades.

The Indo-Pak war of 1971 ended with the breakup of East Pakistan into a new country Bangladesh with the help of the Indian Army.
