Onam 2022: Onam is the most auspicious festival of Kerala and is celebrated with full enthusiasm and pomp. This harvest festival celebrates the homecoming of the legendary king Mahabali. According to the Malayali calendar, this festival is celebrated between August and September in the month of Chingam. This year the 10-day festival began on August 30 and will begin on September 8 with Thiru-Onam, which is considered the most auspicious.

Like other festivals, the occasion also involves flowers, and what appeals to all age groups is the Onam Pookalam or Onam Rangoli made of flowers. On the first day of the festival, the flower rangoli is known as ‘Athapu’. The flowers used for Athapookalam are usually unique.

Here are the varieties of flowers used for Pookalam in Onam celebrations:

  1. thumb
    Thumba or Ceylon slitwort is a small white flower which is essential in making Pookalam. It is the only flower on the day of Attam, the first day of Onam Pookalam.
  2. basil
    While Tulsi is not a flower, it is a must for Onam Pookalam. The green color illuminates the Rangoli, while the fragrance spreads peace all around.
  3. jamanti
    Zamanthi or Chrysanthemum, they are called the flower of innocence and happiness. You can find these flowers in different colors like red, yellow, orange and white. Using these colors in Pookalam will make it look colorful and vibrant.
  4. Chethi
    The forest flame, also known as ad chethi, is a red colored flower that enhances the overall charm of the pookalam. The rich color appears brilliant.
  5. coniferous
    Coniferous or butterfly pea is a vibrant blue flower with a yellow center. It can be found in almost every region of Kerala and blooms during Onam, which may be the reason why it is one of the most popular flowers used in Onam Pookalam.
  6. Chamberathi
    Chembarathi or commonly known as Hibiscus or Shoe Flower, is a deep red colored flower that looks divine when added to Onam Pookalam.
