England manager Gareth Southgate has said online racial abuse against black players in the team has complicated preparation for a penalty shootout after the 2020 European Championship final.

Italy were crowned European champions after a 3–2 win over England in a shootout at Wembley Stadium.

England’s Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were targeted after missing a spot-kick. The match ended 1–1 after extra time.

“We went through the penalty preparation process. We have definitely reviewed it,” Southgate was quoted as saying ahead of England’s UEFA Nations League match against Germany.

“But indirectly we’ve created another layer of difficulty in overcoming penalty shootouts. I have to take all these things into account and it’s incredibly complicated.”

Southgate also insisted that he would not allow a shootout lapse to affect the results when he chose to take a penalty.

“You would think it would not be right to not pick the best players … because what would be the possible consequences of missing them,” Southgate said. “I have to pick them on the belief that they are going to score.”
