OpenAI has acknowledged that GPT-4 LLM, which powers the ChatGPT Plus Chatbot, has got “lazier.” Here’s what you need to know.
OpenAI was in the news for the better part of November when CEO Sam Altman was fired and then hired back. And while that may have been a temporary bad look, OpenAI is not trying to lag behind compared to rivals, especially with Google bringing the big guns with the Gemini 1.0 AI model family. This is evident in the fact that the company has acknowledged that GPT-4 LLM, which powers the ChatGPT Plus Chatbot, has got “lazier.”
“We’ve heard all your feedback about GPT-4 getting lazier! We haven’t updated the model since Nov 11th, and this certainly isn’t intentional,” OpenAI posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).
It further added, “Model behavior can be unpredictable, and we’re looking into fixing it.”
For those uninitiated, lately, users using GPT-4 have suggested that OpenAI has degraded the experience, and that the model is almost “fearful” of giving answers. While some others said that they need to be more specific with their prompts, which was not needed earlier.
In its defense, OpenAI further notes that the model has not “somehow changed itself” since November 12 (last updated). But, the problem exists in the fact that “differences in model behavior can be subtle,” and that only certain prompts might be “degraded.” Despite these changes, OpenAI notes that it may take a while for users and employees to notice these patterns.
OpenAI has not promised a set deadline to release the new, updated model, but it will certainly be watching rivals like Google with the release of the Gemini 1.0 family.
