Opening date, ticket details of the Mughal Gardens of Rashtrapati Bhavan, now known as Amrit Udyan

New Delhi: The Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President, has assigned a new collective identity to its gardens as part of the “Amrit Mahotsav of Independence” celebrations, the agency reported.

According to the Deputy Press Secretary to the President, Navika Gupta, the gardens of Rashtrapati Bhavan are now known as Amrit Udyan to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence. The garden will be inaugurated by President Draupadi Murmu from January 31.

The gardens will be accessible to the general public on 31 January and will remain open till March 2023. (Except Mondays which are maintenance days and March 18 due to Holi). According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement, the gardens will be open from March 28 to March 31 for special categories of people like farmers (on March 28), people with disabilities (on March 29), defense personnel, paramilitary forces and police. (on 30 March), and for women (including SHGs of tribal women on 31 March).

Amrit Udyan draws inspiration from the Mughal Gardens in Jammu and Kashmir, the gardens around the Taj Mahal, and even miniature paintings from India and Persia. The website of Rashtrapati Bhavan mentions both Mughal Gardens and Amrit Udyan. The website claims that Amrit Udyan, spread over 15 acres, is often described as the “soul” of the Presidential Palace.

“The collective identity of all the gardens of the Rashtrapati Bhavan will be ‘Amrit Udyan’,” says Ajay Singh, press secretary to the President. Earlier there was a descriptive identity, now the gardens have been given a new identity.

Rashtrapati Bhavan’s website says, “Amrit Udyan was so far only opened to the public during the annual festival, Udyan Utsav, which was held in the months of February-March, but the Mughal Garden, which is the third part of the Rashtrapati Bhavan tour makes the circuit, will now be open to the public from August to March.”
