Opposition MPs protest in Parliament premises on Adani issue

Opposition MPs protested in front of the Gandhi statue in the Parliament complex on February 6, demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe or a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the Adani case.

Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned till 2 pm after opposition members protested in Parliament demanding a discussion on the issue.

Adani Group has said that it complies with all applicable laws and disclosure requirements. Protests by various opposition parties followed a meeting on the morning of February 6 to coordinate their joint strategy in the House on the Adani issue.

Congress, DMK, NCP, BRS, JDU, SP, CPI(M), CPI, JMM, RLD, RSP, AAP, IUML, RJD and Shiv Sena participated in the meeting held in the chamber of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge.

Members of the Trinamool Congress skipped the meeting of opposition leaders, but joined the opposition leaders’ protest in front of the Gandhi statue in the Parliament complex.

Raising slogans, the opposition MPs held a banner that read, “We demand a JPC or SC-monitored inquiry into the Adani scam”. They also held posters and placards demanding JPC and SBI investment in Adani group to save public money of LIC.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge told reporters, “We demand a discussion on our notice, we are ready for a detailed discussion. We want the Adani issue to be taken up first.” President’s address.

He said that the first demand of the opposition is that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should answer on this issue. Mr Kharge claimed that the government did not want the matter to be raised and discussed in Parliament. “They want to avoid it anyway and don’t want to bring it on record,” he said.

Congress MP and Whip in Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore has given notice for adjournment of the House to raise the Adani issue.

“The House should come forward to discuss the matter, keeping aside other routine business, and constitute a Joint Parliamentary Committee to further investigate the matter. The House should also direct the Prime Minister to Disclose the actual loss of public money to this House,” Mr Tagore said in his adjournment notice. Congress MP and Rajya Sabha Whip Syed Naseer Hussain has also given adjournment notice under Rule 267 to discuss the Adani issue.

“This House suspends Zero Hour and relevant rules relating to Question Hour and other businesses of the day to discuss the issue of fraud in investments by LIC, SBI, public sector banks and other financial institutions, losing market value, jeopardizing earnings. Savings of crores of Indians,” he said in the notice.

Congress MPs in Rajya Sabha Pramod Tiwari and Ami Yagnik have also given adjournment notice under Rule 267 to discuss the Adani issue and investments in the group by LIC and SBI.

BRS MPs in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have also given adjournment notices on the Adani issue. BRS leader in Rajya Sabha K Keshav Rao has given notice under Rule 267 in the Upper House, while party MP Nama Nageswara Rao has given notice in Lok Sabha for discussion on the issue.
