Orange alert for six Maharashtra districts – What is the forecast for Mumbai?

The India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for six districts of Maharashtra on Thursday. The affected areas will include the Thane and Palghar districts adjacent to Mumbai as well as Raigad, Ratnagiri, Nasik and Pune. Meanwhile an yellow alert has been issued for seven districts including Mumbai.

According to the Met department, Raigad, Palghar and Pune are slated to receive ‘heavy to very heavy rainfall’ in isolated places on June 30. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Mumbai, Thane, Ratnagiri, Nasik and Satara tomorrow.

Orange alert has been issued for three districts tomorrow, while five districts – including Mumbai and Thane – have sounded an yellow alert. 

Mumbai has faced traffic snarls, waterlogging and local train delays over the past few days as rain battered large swathes of the city and adjoining areas. Three people have been killed in two days due to tree fall incidents while others were injured.

Two people were killed in separate tree fall incidents in Mumbai’s western suburbs on Wednesday. This was followed by a third incident on Thursday that saw one person killed and another injured after a tree fell on their hut.

In the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Thursday, Colaba in south Mumbai received 148 mm rainfall, while Santacruz in western suburbs recorded 121.6 mm rainfall, according to the IMD, Mumbai.

As per the BMC, the island city, eastern and western suburbs received an average 93 mm, 127 mm and 123 mm rainfall, respectively, in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Thursday.

The weather department said that southwest monsoon was likely to cover the whole country in the next two days.
