Oscars 2022: Lata Mangeshkar, Dilip Kumar out of ‘In Memoriam’ segment The world of cinema lost two stars on being a singer Lata Mangeshkari and actors Dilip Kumar left for his heavenly abode. However, in In Memoriam Section The 94th Oscars, 2022, did not mention these two iconic stars of the Indian film industry. Every year, the In Memoriam section of the Oscars pays tribute to the global film industry’s artists and filmmakers who died the previous year. This time the In Memoriam section paid tributes to artists such as Sidney Poitier, Betty White, Evan Reitman, Stephen Sondheim among many others, but did not honor the two Indian stalwarts Lata Mangeshkar and Dilip Kumar. This upset many netizens as they took to their social media handles to express their anger. While one user tweeted, ‘Amazing world-record maker #LataMangeshkar (who passed away from covid) sang more songs for more films than all Oscars combined combined. Still, #Oscars2022 #Inmemorium didn’t feel it appropriate to honor him even with a mention. Sometimes, I feel, colonialism is still alive…’, wrote another, ‘The #Lata Mangeshkar #BollywoodFame of Indian Cinema – Nightingale of India – not even mentioned in the memorials of those in the film passed away last year. Another tweeted, “Great respect to both the stalwarts but is there any precedent where an Indian film personality was mentioned on Oscar presentation night who didn’t contribute directly or indirectly to Hollywood? Don’t know why it was even an expectation.’ Notably, Lata Mangeshkar passed away on the morning of February 6, more than 28 days after being admitted to the hospital after contracting COVID-19 and battling pneumonia and several other age-related issues. In a career spanning over seven decades, Madhurya Rani recorded songs for over a thousand Hindi films and over 36 regional Indian and foreign languages. Coming to Dileep, the acting icon passed away on July 7 last year at the age of 98 after a prolonged illness. He played unforgettable roles in films like ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, ‘Devdas’ and many more.
