Our surveys on poverty while others do them to address communal tension, Kerala to never implement CAA: CM Vijayan

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that while other states conduct ‘surveys in places of worship’, states are conducting surveys for better position.

Different types of surveys are being done in many places in our country. These are surveys that will divide people. There are reports that some places of worship are being surveyed to create communal tension. We are also doing survey here but it is not meant to divide people but it is related to people. A survey to find out the extremely poor families in our state is over,” he said while addressing the one year celebrations of his government in Thiruvananthapuram.

His statement was a taunt on the recent Gyanvapi mosque controversy in Uttar Pradesh, in which a recent survey was conducted to determine whether a temple existed in the complex before.

The CM also said that the Citizenship Amendment Act will not be implemented in the state, adding that citizenship ‘cannot be determined on the basis of religion’.

“A section of the people in the country is living in great anxiety. One of the most criticized and unacceptable steps in our country was the determination of citizenship on the basis of religion. Our citizenship is not something that should be determined on the basis of religion. When the central government said they would go ahead with it, Kerala had said from the beginning without hesitation that we would not implement the Citizenship Amendment Act,” Vijayan said.

The CM said that many people had raised the question whether a state can say that they will not implement something decided by the central government. “This constitution ensures secularism and no one can decide anything against the constitution,” he said.

“The state took this decision on the basis of what is in the Constitution. There has been talk of implementing CAA on many responsible posts in different phases. During all these times, Kerala has stood by its stand and we will continue to do so.

The Chief Minister of Kerala has said from the beginning that the state government will not implement the CAA. In December 2019, the state assembly had passed a resolution against the CAA. The Congress-led UDF opposition was also in support of the resolution. Kerala was one of the first states to bring such a proposal.
