Over 2.5 Crore Informal Employees Registered on E-Shram Portal

The Labor Ministry said that more than 2.5 crore unorganized workers have registered on the e-shram portal. The e-Shram portal was inaugurated on August 26, 2021. “So far over 2.5 crore registrations have been done on the portal,” the labor ministry said in a statement. The portal is the first national database of unorganized workers including migrant workers, construction workers, gig and platform workers.

Labor and Employment Minister Bhupendra Yadav also informed that in the fourth week, the galloping registration of unorganized workers has exceeded 1.71 crore, in this (5th) week, in total more than 2.51 crore workers are registered on this portal.

An estimated 38 crore workers are engaged in the unorganized sector and employment (Economic Survey, 2019-20). Earlier in the day, the Union Minister flagged off the field work of Area Frame Establishment Survey (AFES) at Labor Bureau Bhawan, Chandigarh on the occasion of 101st Foundation Day of Labor Bureau. Yadav said that following the motto of Mahanat Ko Samman, Adhikar Equal, the government is focusing on the welfare of workers through evidence based policy making.

During the programme, he mentioned that data on all aspects of labor is important and scientifically collected data is the cornerstone for any evidence-based policy formulation. The increasing importance of data in times to come, coupled with the fact that India is a labor rich nation, deserves the strengthening and full support of a dedicated organization for labor and price statistics like the Labor Bureau, the minister said.

The Minister held discussions with State Labor Ministers, Labor Secretaries and Commissioners of States of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh regarding progress and preparedness regarding registration of unorganized workers under e-shram portal. Of. of the States/UTs on the implementation of various schemes and reforms.

The Minister also distributed e-shram cards to the unorganized workers and gave approval letters under the ESIC COVID Relief Scheme to the dependents of those who lost their lives due to the pandemic.
