Over 4.67 lakh people affected by floods in Odisha

According to the official, over 60,000 people were shifted to safer places on Wednesday.

Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Jena said on Wednesday that over 4.67 lakh people from 1,757 villages in 10 districts of Odisha have been affected by the flood situation due to heavy rains in the state so far.

Mr Jena said that “due to the heavy rains and the subsequent floods, over 2.5 lakh people in 425 villages have been submerged in the floods, while a total of over 4.67 lakh people have been affected in 10 districts.”

He further said that till Wednesday evening, more than 60,000 people were evacuated to safer places.

“The administration is on alert. If needed, we will evacuate more people. Food and water are being provided to those who have been evacuated,” the official said.

Giving information about the status of flood water level in Hirakud dam, Shri Jena said that the flood water is being released from Hirakud reservoir through 40 gates and the flood water from the dam has come down to 5.80 lakh cusecs while the water The outflow is made. 6.69 lakh cusecs

“Wednesday night is crucial as the peak floods will pass through low-lying areas of Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Puri districts and the water level is likely to recede from tomorrow onwards,” he added.

Mr Jena informed that 11 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 12 teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Response Force (ODRF) and 52 teams of Odisha Fire Services have been deployed in the flood affected districts.

Meanwhile, the state government has asked the district education officers of the flood-affected districts to provide school buildings for shelter and relief distribution.
