Congress leader P Chidambaram came out to support Dean Rathinvel, who was removed from the post of Dean of Madurai Medical College after first-year students took the oath of the modified ‘Maharishi Charaka Oath’ instead of the Hippocratic Oath.

Congress leader P Chidambaram condemned the action Madurai Medical College first year students Who took Maharishi Charaka Shapak instead of Hippocratic oath. However, he said that the doctors had informed him that the incident took place without the knowledge of the dean.

Besides this, P Chidambaram also praised the former dean for his works at Shivangai District Hospital during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Dean Dr Rathinvel did a commendable job during the corona pandemic at Sivagangai District Hospital. They should not be held responsible if the error has happened without their knowledge. My concern is that people should not lose the service of a good senior doctor,” tweeted Chidambaram.

Chidambaram also said that, “Many doctors have claimed that the student leader committed this mistake without informing the dean of the medical college.”

Dr Rathinvel was relieved from the post of Dean of Madurai Medical College on Saturday, 30 April after first-year students took Maharishi Charaka Sharath’s translation into English as an oath instead of the Hippocratic Oath.

Tamil Nadu Finance Minister PTR Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, who attended the event, said, “I was quite surprised when I heard the new oath, I always thought that doctors took the Hippocratic oath. In fact, I would encourage politicians to take the same oath. I’ve been advising.”
