Pakistan PM congratulates Xi Jinping on securing third term as leader of China

Xi Jinping was re-appointed as the head of China’s Central Military Commission.

Islamabad:

Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday congratulated Chinese President Xi Jinping on securing a third term as the country’s top leader.

Sharif described Xi Jinping’s re-election as a tribute to his “unwavering devotion” to the people of China.

Sharif tweeted, “On behalf of the entire Pakistani nation, I congratulate President Xi Jinping on his re-election as CPC Secretary General for a third term. This is due to his efficient leadership and unwavering dedication to serving the people of China. A wonderful tribute to you.”

Congratulating his Chinese counterpart, Pakistan President Arif Alvi described him as a “true friend of Pakistan”.

“I heartily congratulate Xi Jinping on his re-election as CPC Secretary General, and wish him well for his health and happiness. He is a true friend of Pakistan and champion of the All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership between Pakistan and China. Huh.” Alvi tweeted.

Xi Jinping was re-elected on Sunday as general secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China for a record third five-year term, a privilege granted only to party founder Mao Zedong.

Xi was also appointed the head of China’s Central Military Commission.

His reappointment as party leader marks a pivotal moment in the modern history of China, which is decisively leaning towards one-man rule after decades of power-sharing among the elite.

The 69-year-old is now on course for a third term as China’s president, due to be formally announced during the government’s annual legislative session in March.

China is a major economic and political partner of Pakistan, pushing the multi-billion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Launched in 2015, the CPEC, which connects Gwadar Port in Pakistan’s Balochistan with China’s Xinjiang province, is the flagship project of China’s ambitious multi-billion dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
