Hussain, 64, was suffering from heart ailment and was taken to the hospital on Monday morning after his health deteriorated. The Olympian was admitted to the Shalimar Hospital in Lahore where he passed away.

The hospital management withheld the body of the veteran player for several hours for non-payment of medical dues. Later, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) took cognizance of the matter and arranged for a payment of PKR 500,000 (US$ 2,266) to the hospital to hand over the body to his family, a Punjab government official told PTI.

He said that it was a matter of great embarrassment to all that a great Olympian passed away and his body was withheld by the hospital for not paying the dues.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif tweeted that he was deeply saddened and saddened by his demise.
