Panagal Park to be acquired for Metro Rail Phase II project

The Greater Chennai Corporation Council on Saturday passed a resolution to hand over the Panagal Park to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) for the Phase II project.

The council allowed CMRL to take possession of 323 square meters of land at the iconic landmark of T. Nagar by paying Rs 3.72 crore.

A total of 3,069 square meters of land will be used for the work and will be handed over to the corporation after the completion of the work.

legal hurdles

The park is spread over 19,434 square meters and CMRL had demanded 6,911 square meters of land for the project.

However, the existing rules allow construction in only 5% of the park area.

Since the project required better transportation, the civic body allowed CMRL to cut 87 trees, demolish 893 square meters of footpath and 93 meters of wall.

Shops handed over

Shops and footpaths on Arcot Road in Puliyur village and open space at Virugambakkam belonging to the corporation have been handed over to CMRL.

Another piece of land on Kaliamman Koil Street will be handed over to CMRL.

The land of the corporation has been handed over for the project on OMR. CMRL has been asked to carry out the construction work without disturbing the local residents.
