Panic over “leopard-like animal” in Noida, forest officials say it is a cat

A team of Gautam Buddha Nagar Forest Department has started a search operation.

Noida:

A wild animal lurking in Greater Noida has created panic among the residents. Officials say the animal is not a leopard but has spots similar to it.

The animal, believed to be a fishing cat, was spotted hiding in the basement of an under-construction tower at an apartment complex on Tuesday afternoon.

A team from the Gautam Buddh Nagar Forest Department has launched a search operation to trace the animal, while residents have been asked to stay indoors.

A team of Forest Department has also been called from Meerut to help in the search.

Divisional forest officer Pramod Kumar Srivastava, who scanned the video taken by the security guards, said the animal appeared to be a fishing cat – a species of cat that has “spots like a leopard”.

The video shows the animal running into the basement of the half-completed tower.

Last week too, some residents of the apartment complex raised hue and cry claiming to have seen a leopard.
