Parliament inauguration: Here’s look at materials inside the new building

The new Parliament building will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on May 28. Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Hariwansh and some senior ministers in the government are likely to be part of the ceremony.

The present building of the Parliament was completed in 1927 and is now 96 years old. Over the years, the old building was found to be inadequate for present-day requirements.

Interestingly, the new Parliament building will represent the ethos of India with different materials of the building sourced from India’s various regions. The sandstone for the building has been brought from Rajasthan’s Samthura while the Ashoka Chakras inside both the houses have been sourced from Indore.

All you need to know about the materials inside the new Parliament building:

1) The sandstone for the new Parliament building has been procured from Rajasthan’s Sarmathura. Notably, sandstone for Delhi’s Humayun’s Tomb and Red Fort is also known to be sourced from Sarmathura.

2) The Kesharia green stone inside the Lok Sabha chamber has been sourced from Udaipur while the red granite inside the Rajya Sabha chamber has been procured from Lakha in Ajmer and the white marbles has been brought from Ambaji.

3) The furniture for the new parliament building was crafted in Mumbai while the teakwood for the building was procured from Nagpur.

4) The steel used in the false ceiling structure of the new Parliament Building was brought from Daman and Diu and the material for sculpting Ashoka Emblem was sourced from Aurangabad and Jaipur.

5) The Ashoka Chakras that are installed inside Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha along with the Parliament’s exterior were sourced from Indore.

6) The lattice work around the new Parliament was sourced from Rajasthan, Noida and Uttar Pradesh.

7) Stone aggregates for the new building were procured from Kotputali and the sculptors who did the carving work belonged to Udaipur’s Abu Road.
