Parliament Monsoon Session: BJP-Congress clash over key issues

The Congress Parliamentary Strategy Group on Saturday conducted a meeting on Saturday ahead of the upcoming monsoon session of the Parliament that will begin on July 20 and continue till August 11. The grand old party has discussed various issues to be raised in the House.

CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, party’s general secretary were among the members who attended the meeting, according to the news agency ANI.

In the meeting, the Congress party decided to corner the central government on various issues like Manipur violence, rising inflation, unemployment, railway safety, assault on the country’s federal structure, etc.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was yet to break his silence over Manipur violence even after two months.

He also reiterated Congress’ demand for the resignation of the Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh and said the party feels that Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Manipur had not yielded anything as violence continued to rage in the northeastern state, ANI reported.

“The disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as an MP also came for discussion during the meeting. While the matter is in the courts, the party hopes that justice will be done and Rahul Gandhi will be able to attend the session,” Ramesh said.

He disclosed that the Congress president also briefed the MPs about the meeting of the opposition parties held in Patna, saying such meetings will continue and the next will be held in Bengaluru.

On the Uniform Civil Code, the Congress leader said, the party had already made its stand clear on June 15. “Since nothing new had come during the last 15 days on the matter, the party had nothing to add to it as of now.”

Apart from these issues, the grand old party will also raise the ill-treatment of the protesting wrestlers, and the issue of President Droupadi Murmu not being invited to the inauguration of the new parliament building.

Ramesh reiterated the party’s demand for constituting the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Adani scandal. He said the matter had been raised in the previous session also, as per ANI reports.

The party will also raise the issue of the conduct of various governors in different states, saying it was an assault on the federal structure of the country.
