The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which seeks to link the voter list with Aadhaar number, was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday, amid continued protests by opposition members. It is listed in the list of legislative business for the Rajya Sabha for consideration and passing.

The Bill allows voter registration officers to ask for Aadhaar numbers of applicants wishing to register as voters to establish the applicant’s identity. However, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju clarified that linking of Aadhaar with Electoral Photo Identity Card is voluntary.

It seeks to allow officers to call for numbers “from persons already included in the electoral roll for the purposes of authentication of entries in the electoral roll, and for identifying the registration of the name of the same person in more than one electoral roll”. ₹13,109 crore recovered from economic fugitives: Finance Minister

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday informed the Lok Sabha that banks have recovered Rs 13,109.17 crore by selling properties of fugitives like Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.

The minister’s remarks came during his reply to a discussion on the second batch of supplementary demands for grants, which was passed by the Lok Sabha by voice vote.

Discussions on supplementary demands for grants authorizing the government to spend an additional ₹3.73 lakh crore during the current financial year ended last week.

Government not allowing discussion in Parliament on important issues: Rahul

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused the government of not allowing discussion on important issues and said that the central government is responsible for running the Parliament and not the opposition.

“They are attacking democracy. Democracy is under constant attack and that is why we are fighting here. Kheri violence among other issues.

Mr Gandhi had given a notice for an adjournment motion to discuss the issue of “statehood and inclusion of Ladakh in Schedule VI of the Constitution”.

However, the issue could not be taken up as the Lok Sabha saw several adjournments on the opposition’s demand to sack Minister of State (MoS) Ajay Mishra Teni for his alleged involvement in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

The Lok Sabha passed the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 amid persistent protests by the opposition members. Protests took place in both the houses throughout the day on Monday. Opposition members in Lok Sabha called for discussion on various issues including the Lakhimpur Kheri incident in which Ashish Mishra, son of Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra ‘Theni’ is the main accused.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced ‘The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Amendment) Bill, 2021’ in Rajya Sabha amid constant protests by opposition MPs. And even when the Chairman asked members to speak on the subject, several opposition MPs continued to raise the issue of suspension of their 12 colleagues as well as their demand for Mr. Mishra’s removal.

During the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, questions related to mid-day meal schemes, conservation of monuments, conservation of forests, social security benefits for gig and platform workers and overseas job opportunities for the youth of the country were considered.
