Paytm has issued a clarification regarding the security of its FASTag after a video alleging a scam went viral on social media. In a viral video, a child is shown stealing money by secretly scanning a Paytm FASTag on a car on the pretext of cleaning the windshield. The man in the video claimed that this was a new scam and he had faced it several times in the past. The video has since been rubbished by news organisations, including the Times of India. An ethical hacker told the publication that such an operation was not possible. BoomLive found that the people in the video are actors who have played many different roles before.
Now, Paytm on Twitter termed the video as fake. “A video is spreading misinformation about Paytm FASTag which incorrectly shows a smartwatch scanning FASTag. As per NETC guidelines, FASTag payments can be initiated only by authorized merchants, after multiple rounds of testing done onboard. Paytm FASTag is completely safe and secure.”

“The simplest argument is this – if it works at all, why would someone risk washing a car and pretending to scan? He’d just walk into the parking lot and scan one by one without noticing. Were,” commented a Twitter user. “Whoever made this should be arrested. They can be identified in the video. Amd If the scanning of Paytm FASTag was possible with this watch method, it would be on parked vehicles. Could also have been done.. so obviously fake [sic]”Wrote another.

This is completely fake.
If the road was that easy, these boys would go to any major parking lot and scan as many cars as they wanted. https://t.co/rtvWi6epg9— Shrikant Dhobe (@SrikanthDhobe) 25 June 2022
