Pegasus hearing: Center did not cooperate in probe: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Thursday said that the central government did not cooperate in the investigation of Pegasus spyware cases. Apart from this, the SC-appointed inquiry panel found any kind of malware in 5 of the 29 phones that were examined by the technical committee. The panel submitted the report to the top court in three parts, one part suggesting legislation to protect the right to privacy of citizens.

Pegasus is spyware developed by the Israeli cyber-arms company NSO Group that allows operators to stealthily attack a target’s mobile device, giving them access to contacts, messages and movement history. NSO has been linked to a number of scams resulting from alleged misuse by customers of its flagship Pegasus phone monitoring software.

Critics, including human rights groups and outside researchers, say clients have misused Pegasus to keep tabs on journalists, rights activists and political dissidents.
