Perception created by media trial convicts a person before courts: CJI Chandrachud

In the matter of media trial, he said, “One of the major emails in our system is trialed by the media. A person is innocent until convicted by a court of law. This is an important aspect of the legal process.

“However, there have been instances when the media created a controversy, thereby making the person guilty in the public eye even before counter-charges were filed. It can have an impact on people’s lives and due process.”

In the context of overall responsibility, he said, “It is like the engine that takes democracy forward and is based on the pursuit of truth, justice and equality. When I am talking about the digital time share, it becomes all the more important that journalists maintain the details of concern, sharing and responsibility in their commentary.

He also said that media review needs diverse and representative newsrooms with thoroughly researched news stories from different perspectives and voices.

Regarding Virkak Paparazzi, the Chief Justice said that he tells the story of the judicial system throwing light on the intricacies of the law.

“However, the selective quoting of judges’ speeches and documents by journalists in India is a matter of concern. There is thus a tendency to specialize public understanding of important legal matters.

Chandrachud said that social media is changing for the better in many ways and the online platform has given him an opportunity to start his own channel.
