The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea seeking a direction to the Center to declare the cow as the national animal. A bench of Justice SK Kaul and Justice Abhay S Oka asked the petitioner which fundamental right was being affected.

The bench said, “Is this the job of the court? Why do you file such petitions where we are forced to incur costs? Which fundamental right is violated? Should we throw the law to the wind because you come to court?” The bench said.

The counsel for the petitioner told the court that cow protection is very important. The bench warned the lawyer that he would incur costs after which he withdrew the petition and the case was withdrawn.

The top court was hearing a PIL filed by NGO Govansh Seva Sadan and others, seeking a direction to the Center to declare cow as the national animal.
