Petrol, diesel sales fall in January as Omicron expands – Times of India

New Delhi: India’s petrol and diesel sales The first fortnight of January fell as a third wave of the pandemic begins to bite the economy as reflected in a decline in workplace mobility and airline traffic.
Diesel sales, which account for nearly 40 per cent of India’s total fuel consumption and reflect industrial activity, fell 14.1 per cent to 2.47 million tonnes during January 1 to 15, compared to the same period in December and a year ago. In comparison it was 4.99 percent. , preliminary data from state fuel retailers showed.
Diesel sales were down about 8 per cent in the January 2020 period.
Local restrictions have been imposed in many parts of the country due to the rapid spread of the Omicron version of the coronavirus, affecting truck movement.
petrol sales The data showed that 9,64,380 tonnes during January 1-15 was lower by 13.81 per cent as compared to the first fortnight of December and 2.82 per cent lower than the year-ago period.
However, it was 5.66 per cent higher than January 2020 sales and remained above pre-Covid-19 levels as people continued to prefer using private vehicles over public transport due to safety reasons.
Jet fuel sales fell 13 per cent to 2,08,980 tonnes during the first half of January, up 7.34 per cent year-on-year from the month-ago figure. This was 38.2 per cent lower than the January 2020 figures.
LPG sales grew by 4.85 per cent month-on-month and 9.47 per cent year-on-year to 1.28 million tonnes. This was 15.25 per cent higher than January 2020, the data showed.
LPG sales have been high due to free cylinders distributed by the government to reduce the impact of COVID on the poor.
