Fuel prices in the country have remained unchanged for almost two months, except in Maharashtra, where the Eknath Shinde-led government on Friday announced a cut in Value Added Tax (VAT). Maharashtra government reduced VAT on petrol by Rs 5 per liter and on diesel by Rs 3 per liter. Meanwhile, fuel prices remained stable in the rest of the country on Tuesday. The last reduction in petrol and diesel prices came after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on May 21 announced a cut in excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per liter and on diesel by Rs 6 per liter.
The retail price of petrol in Mumbai is Rs 106.31 per liter, while the retail price of diesel in the financial capital is Rs 94.27 per litre. In Chennai, petrol consumers will have to pay Rs 102.63 per liter, while diesel consumers will have to pay Rs 94.24 per litre. A liter of petrol in Kolkata is priced at Rs 106.03, while a liter of diesel in the city is selling at Rs 92.76 per litre. The retail price of petrol in Delhi remains at Rs 96.72 per liter, while the retail price of diesel in the national capital is Rs 89.62 per litre.
Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) like Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) revise fuel prices. Any changes made by the OMCs are implemented from 6 am daily. Fuel price changes are caused by many factors, including foreign exchange rates, inflation, and international crude oil prices. Retail prices of petrol and diesel vary from state to state within a country due to factors such as local taxes such as VAT or freight charges.
