PM-CARES: WCD says 3,855 children orphaned during Kovid approved for benefits

New Delhi The Narendra Modi government in a press release on Wednesday confirmed that 3,855 children who have lost both parents or surviving parents or legal guardians or adoptive parents During The Kovid-19 pandemic can be supported under the PM CARES scheme for children.

Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha said that out of total 6,624 applications received for assistance under the scheme, 3,855 have been approved.

Maximum 1,158 applications were received Received As per the data shared by Irani, Maharashtra is followed by 768 in Uttar Pradesh, 739 in Madhya Pradesh, 496 in Tamil Nadu and 479 in Andhra Pradesh.

This scheme is available through an online portal i.e. pmcaresforchildren.in. The applications of such children are uploaded on the portal by the respective State/UT Governments.

The Government of India also informed that they are implementing a Centrally Sponsored Scheme named Child Protection Services (CPS) Scheme – Mission Vatsalya, under which States and the Center will provide services to children in need of care and in difficult circumstances. Assistance is provided to the governments of the territories.

Child Care Institutions (CCIs) established under the CPS scheme, inter alia, support age-appropriate education, access to vocational training, recreation, health care, counseling, etc.

The Ministry also shared advisories and guidelines for supporting states/UTs with regard to child care institutions, including vaccination for eligible children residing there and mental health support to children and caregivers.
