Bindyarani Devi won silver medal in women’s 55 kg weightlifting at Commonwealth Games

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated weightlifter Bindiyarani Devi on winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK.

The Prime Minister highlighted that this achievement is an expression of his tenacity and has made every Indian very happy.

Bindyarani Devi won a silver medal in women’s 55kg weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2022, taking India’s tally to four on Saturday. She looked set for bronze when she failed in her second clean and jerk attempt of 114kg.

But she attempted 116kg with her final lift and managed to enter second place, finishing with just 1kg less than Nigeria’s gold medalist Adijat Olarinoy. The 23-year-old lifted a total of 202 kg. He lifted 86 kg in the snatch round and 116 kg in the clean and jerk round at the Commonwealth Games.

Nigeria’s Adijat Adenike Olarinoy also erased the Games record in the snatch and total effort with a total effort of 203 kg (92 kg (111 kg)) to win the gold medal.

Earlier, Mirabai Chanu had won India’s first gold medal, while Sanket Sargar and Gururaja Pujari won silver and bronze medals respectively.
