PM Modi advocates repeal of old criminal laws, jail reforms in DGP meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called for further strengthening of traditional police machinery like foot patrolling. Addressing the All India Conference of Directors General of Police, he also advocated repeal of obsolete criminal laws and implementation of prison reforms to improve prison management. PM suggested to make police forces more sensitive and technologically updated.

The two-day meeting concluded with the distribution of Police Medals for Distinguished Services by the PM.

Prime Minister Modi also stressed on the need to enhance collaboration between state police and central agencies to leverage capabilities and share best practices. He recommended that standards be created for police organizations across states and discussed strengthening of border as well as coastal security by conducting frequent visits of officers.

“The Prime Minister suggested to make police forces more sensitive and train them in emerging technologies. He stressed on the importance of National Data Governance Framework to facilitate exchange of data between agencies. The Prime Minister suggested that while we should take more advantage of technological solutions like biometrics etc., there is also a need to strengthen traditional policing mechanisms like foot patrolling etc.,” added a PIB press note.

Modi also suggested replicating the DGsP/IGsP conference model at the state and district levels.

The conference covered various aspects of policing and national security, including counter terrorism, counter insurgency and Cyber ​​security, Over 600 officials, including the Home Minister and the National Security Advisor, participated in the event remotely or in person.
