Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called upon the people of Gujarat to vote in record numbers in the state assembly elections. He tweeted, “Voting for the first phase of Gujarat assembly elections is taking place today. I call upon all those voting today, especially first-time voters, to exercise their franchise in record numbers.

Of the total 182 constituencies in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, polling began at 8 am on Thursday in 89 constituencies. These seats are added to 19 state shares and a total of 788 literacy is at stake in this phase.

Leaders whose electoral fortunes are at stake in this phase include Bharatiya Janata Party’s Harsh Shanghvi, party’s Purnesh Modi, Purushottam Solanki cricketer Ravi Jadeja’s wife Riva Jadeja, Congress’s Lalit Kagathre, Lalit Vasoya, Rutwik Makwana and Mohd Javed Peerzada, Aam Individuals include the party’s unemployed Isudan Gadhvi, its Gujarat unit president Gopal Italia and seven-time MLA and veteran tribal leader Chhotu Basava.
