PM Modi, Argentine President Alberto Fernandez review full range of bilateral ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a fruitful meeting with Argentine President Alberto Fernandez on the sidelines of the G-7 summit here on Sunday and reviewed the full range of bilateral ties.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed various issues such as trade and investment, defense cooperation, agriculture, climate action and food security.

This was the first bilateral meeting between the two leaders. They reviewed the progress in implementing the bilateral Strategic Partnership established in 2019.

Modi arrived here on Sunday on a two-day visit to Germany to attend the G-7 summit, He will hold discussions with leaders of the powerful bloc and its allies on issues such as energy, food security, counter-terrorism, environment and democracy.

Both sides agreed to enhance their bilateral relations in these areas.

Besides India, Germany, the host of the G7 summit, has also invited Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal and South Africa as guests to recognize the democracies of the Global South as their partners.

In 2019, India-Argentina ties were elevated to the level of a strategic partnership. The multifaceted relationship between the two countries has strengthened over the years and includes political, economic, cultural and scientific and technological cooperation.

India opened a trade commission in Buenos Aires in 1943, which was later transformed into one of India’s first embassies in South America in 1949, according to the Indian Embassy in Argentina.

There are about 2,600 NRIs/PIOs in Argentina. Most of them live in the capital city of Buenos Aires, including professionals working with Indian companies and multinational corporations.

From Germany, Modi will travel to the United Arab Emirates on June 28 to condole the death of former Gulf President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Sheikh Khalifa passed away on May 13 after battling the disease for the past several years.
