PM Modi gave a new dimension to millet by calling it Mr. Anna: Tomar

New Delhi: Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said on Saturday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a new meaning and dimension to coarse grains by calling them Shri Anna.

Addressing the gathering at ‘Global Millets’, Tomar said, “The International Year of Millets 2023 will provide an opportunity to increase global production, efficient processing and better use of crop rotation and promote millets as a major component of the food basket. ” Anna) conference in Delhi.

Tomar informed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare is working closely with other Central Ministries, State Governments and other stakeholders to increase millet production and consumption.

Describing millet as nature’s gift to mankind, the Agriculture Minister said, “In times of increasing demand for vegetarian foods, millet is an alternative food system as it contributes to a balanced diet as well as a safe environment.”

Tomar would like to see millet reach plates around the world, especially in Asia and Africa as these are the major producers and consumers of millet crops.

Millet is the first crop to be cultivated in Asia and Africa. It was later adopted as an important food source for advanced civilizations around the world.

At the same conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that millets can play an important role in tackling food security challenges, apart from benefiting the livelihoods of 2.5 crore small and marginal farmers in the country.

Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the ‘Global Millets Conference’, he said, “Millets bring with it infinite possibilities,” and added that it is a matter of great honor for the country that after India’s proposal and efforts, The United Nations declared 2023 as the year. ‘International Year of Millets’.

India grows 17 million tonnes (MT) of millet, which accounts for 80% of Asia’s and 20% of global production. The average yield of millet in the world is 1.20 tonnes per hectare, while in India it is 1.24 tonnes per hectare.
