Modi served 12 years and 227 days (4,607) as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014. He was elected as the 14th PM of India in 2014 and has held the position for 2,671 days since then.
This makes Prime Minister Modi the longest-serving head of an elected government after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
While Nehru and Indira did not serve as chief ministers, they held the office of prime minister for 6,130 and 5,829 days respectively.

When it comes to the tenure of just the prime minister, Modi is the fourth longest-serving leader, with 2,671 days in office as of September 17.
If he continues in office till May 29, 2024, he will overtake Manmohan Singh, which is third on the list.
Modi will have to remain prime minister till March 2031 to surpass Nehru’s record.

The last PM who also served as Chief Minister was JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda. Gowda was the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1994 to 1996 and served as the Prime Minister from 1996-1997.
Notably, among the chief ministers who became the PM, Modi’s tenure as chief minister has been the longest at nearly 13 years.
