Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew to Australia on Monday, aiming to strengthen economic ties by tapping into his country’s fastest-growing diaspora. Modi arrived in Sydney on the last leg of his Asia-Pacific tour to emphasize India’s role as a regional power in the face of China’s growing influence.

A young girl from the Indian diaspora sang a patriotic song to welcome the Indian Prime Minister PM Modi On the insistence of the girl, he said ‘let it be’.

Organizers said 18,000 people were expected at an event on Tuesday evening to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Sydney’s Kudos Bank Arena.

“Look, there’s going to be excitement,” said Jay Shah, director of the India-Australia Diaspora Foundation, which is organizing the show.

Asked about Australian media reports of the division of India and the diaspora under Modi’s Hindu nationalist BJP, Shah said he could not understand such claims from the world’s largest democracy.

“We respect all diverse views,” he told AFP.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will attend the stadium event before hosting Modi at a summit on Wednesday, addressing a crowd that few Australian politicians can meet.

Modi’s visit comes at a time when China is expanding its diplomatic, financial and military footprint in the Asia-Pacific region.

Over the weekend, the Indian leader joined the leaders of the United States, Japan and Australia for a Quad summit in Japan aimed at countering Beijing’s growing assertiveness.
