LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI BIRTH ANNIVERSARY: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tributes to former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary and wished that “May we always work to realise his vision for a strong India”. Taking to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, PM Modi posted: “Remembering Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji on his Jayanti. His simplicity, dedication to the nation, and iconic call for ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ resonate even today, inspiring generations. His unwavering commitment to India’s progress and his leadership during challenging times remain exemplary. May we always work to realise his vision for a strong India.”

Shastri, the second Prime Minister of India, was born on October 2, 1904, in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh. He is fondly remembered as a man of the masses, known for his simplicity, honesty, and dedication to public service.

Shastri joined the Indian independence movement at a young age and was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi. He participated in several non-violent protests and civil disobedience campaigns, and was imprisoned several times by the British authorities.

After India gained independence in 1947, Shastri held several important positions in the government of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He served as the Minister of Transport and Railways, and later as the Minister of Home Affairs.

In 1964, Shastri became the Prime Minister of India following Nehru’s death. His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by a number of challenges, including the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 and the severe drought of 1965-66.

Despite these challenges, Shastri’s leadership was instrumental in guiding India through a difficult time. He is also credited with launching the Green Revolution, which transformed India from a food-deficient country to a food-surplus country.

Shastri’s famous slogan, “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” (Victory to the Soldier, Victory to the Farmer), captured the essence of his vision for India. He believed that a strong military and a prosperous agricultural sector were essential for India’s development.

Shastri died tragically of a heart attack on January 11, 1966, at the age of 61. He is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of India’s post-independence era.
