PM wants to make cities garbage free

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 and Atal Mission 2.0 for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).

After making India open defecation free with the construction of over 100 million toilets since 2014, Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 aims to make cities waste-free, he said.

Modi said, “Under AMRUT 2.0, India aims to improve sewage and septic management to make our cities water-secure and ensure that sewage does not flow anywhere in our rivers.”

The Prime Minister said that Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas are important for the cleanliness campaign.

Modi said that the present generation has taken the initiative to strengthen the cleanliness campaign. “Toffee wrappers are no longer thrown on the ground but carried by children in their pockets. They also ask their elders to avoid throwing garbage. We have to remember that cleanliness is not a job for just a day, a fortnight, a year or a few people.”

“Cleanliness is a great campaign for all, every day, every fortnight, every year, generation after generation. Cleanliness is a lifestyle, cleanliness is a life mantra.”

Modi said India is processing about 100,000 tonnes of waste per day. “When India launched the campaign in 2014, less than 20% of the waste generated every day was processed. Today, we are processing about 70% of the daily waste. Now, we have to take it to 100%,” the PM said.

“The use of modern technology for the development of cities is increasing. The National Automobile Scrappage Policy strengthens the campaign for waste-to-wealth and a circular economy.”

He said that street vendors and hawkers play an important role in the development of urban India.
