Police rioting in Jamshedpur after a clash over insulting the tricolor on Ram Navami

Riot police conducted a flag march in Jamshedpur’s Shastri Nagar this morning.

Jamshedpur:

Riot control police are out and prohibitory orders have been imposed in Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur following a clash between two groups last night over alleged desecration of the Ram Navami flag.

The mob pelted stones at each other and set ablaze two shops and an auto-rickshaw in Shastri Nagar. The police had to fire teargas shells to disperse them.

The situation is now under control, city police chief Prabhat Kumar told news agency ANI. “Those who gathered have been sent home. Forces have been deployed in the entire area, a company of RAF (Rapid Action Force) has been deployed,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner, East Singhbhum, Vijaya Jadhav said that some people have been detained. “We are assessing the situation. Communication is being established with the peace committee and other stakeholders to bring normalcy,” he added.

He said some anti-social elements were trying to disturb peace and sought cooperation from citizens. “We have deployed adequate police force, a quick reaction team, a magistrate, Rapid Action Force personnel and other anti-riot resources to maintain law and order,” he said in a statement.

Ms. Jadhav urged people not to believe in rumours. “People are requested not to believe any rumours. If they receive any inflammatory or offensive message, please inform the police,” he added.

Police said tension prevailed in the area since Saturday when members of a local outfit found the Ram Navami flag desecrated. After this, a protest was held demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits. After last night’s violence, top police officers are camping in the area.
