Police seize 1,642 kg of gutkha in Chennai

The Greater Chennai Police has arrested 1,642 kg of gutka, two vehicles and 61 persons for selling banned tobacco products.

According to a press release, Commissioner of Police Shankar Jiwal launched a drive to stop the sale of banned tobacco products. During the campaign 57 cases have been registered in 7 days from 19 to 25 December.

On December 20, two residents of Poonamallee, 37-year-old S Arunachalam and 31-year-old B Prabhu, were arrested for possessing 1,200 kg of gutka. Mohd Mudazir, 24, a resident of Choolaimedu, was arrested in Aminjikarai after police checked the vehicle and it was found to be carrying 223 kg of banned tobacco products. Police arrested 43-year-old Mohammad Sherif for carrying 82 kg of banned tobacco products in his vehicle in Pallikaranai.

Police have warned commercial establishments to stop the sale of banned tobacco products in the city. Police have also shared information with Chennai Corporation about commercial establishments selling banned tobacco products. The corporation has issued notices to 100 shops selling banned tobacco products.
