Pollution panel decides to reopen Delhi schools by Friday

The Central Air Quality Commission told the Supreme Court that a decision on reopening schools and lifting construction restrictions in Delhi will be taken on or before December 17 and will be based on the impact of relaxations already being given to industrial units. The court had left it to the Centre’s Air Quality Management Commission (CAQM) to consider the requests made by the industry owners and other affected parties for personal hearing and to take their inputs.

The panel today wrote to the court informing about the steps already taken and said it would monitor the impact of these decisions and then take a decision on reopening the schools.

The panel told the court that six thermal power plants, which were shut down, have been allowed to resume operations due to increased demand for power.

Thermal power plants have been advised to run on minimum requirements.

Entry of trucks into Delhi will be restricted, except for CNG/electric trucks and those carrying essential commodities.

The commission will remove the eight-hour operating time restriction from milk and dairy processing units and industries, and processes related to drugs, drugs and life-saving medical devices. They will be allowed to work round the clock.

Time restrictions will also be removed for industries related to paper and pulp processing, distilleries, and captive thermal power plants, and paddy/rice processing. However, for these industries it will be lifted only five days a week. It will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

The commission told the court that the flying squads are continuously monitoring to ensure the implementation of the anti-pollution rules. It added that the enforcement task force has so far issued notices to close 40 sites for non-compliance.
