“Power to recognize tribe as ST lies with President, not High Court”: Supreme Court on Manipuri violence

The Supreme Court has expressed concern over the ongoing protests in Manipur. The CJI has said that our current situation is stable. All our goals are safety. We are reflective of the events there. The court said that it is a human race. Government should take steps to secure the people and rectify the situation. The Supreme Court held that the President, not the High Court, has the authority to recognize a tribe as ST. The court told the government that there was a need to ensure adequate relief including food. There should be a system for the rehabilitation of wireless persons. Protect places of religious worship. The court can fix the next date of hearing on 17th.

What is the reason for violence in Manipur

Two reasons are being given behind the violence in Manikarna. The first reason is that the Meitei community here is given the status of castes. The Kuki and Naga communities have had their own level of Khinki since independence. Now the Meitei community is also demanding this confusion, which is being opposed by the people of the Kuki and Naga communities. The Kuki and Naga communities say that the Meitei community is a majority community, how can it be given this status.

How did the violence start?

People of the Kuki community protested against the government’s decision to meet the Meitei community on May 3. Violence started in this demonstration. On May 4, there was a fire in many places at the place. This work started between the Matei and Kuki communities on the 4th itself. On May 5, when the situation worsens, the army reaches there. After this, more than 10 thousand people were shifted to another place. On the night of May 5 itself, Mithang, an officer of the Indian Revenue Service, was murdered by a mob. He was murdered after being thrown out of the house.
