Abdul Majeed, head of the Social Democratic Party India (SDPI) announced in a closed conference that Shafi Bellare, one of the accused in the murder of BJP youth leader Pravin Netru, will be the organisation’s candidate from Puttur in the upcoming Karnataka assembly elections. Bellare is currently in the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with the murder. The closed conference was held in Mangaluru on 10 February.

“I would like to announce that for the upcoming 2023 elections, from the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), our beloved Shafi Bellare is the candidate for Puttur constituency,” Majeed said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party opposed the move, saying it would take strong action against the SDPI. Speaking to CNN-News18, Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka said that he would request Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to take strict action against the SDPI for declaring a murder accused as its candidate for the elections to be held in May. To be done

“SDPI is also part of the Popular Front of India, which is banned in the country. Giving ticket to a murder accused of BJP worker will ensure that PFI will enter politics through SDPI. The government will take necessary action against him. If he gets ticket, naturally he will get benefits, he will ask permission for campaigning, he will ask security. So I will discuss it with the CM and also take action against SDPI,” said R Ashok.

Praveen Netaru’s parents have opposed the move and said that they do not want Belare to contest elections.

“Ever since they killed my son on July 27, I am washing my hands with tears. My married daughters come once a week and get our work done. If he (Shafi Belare) stands for election then it will be difficult for us. He should not stand for election. I have had three operations and cannot see or hear properly. If some unknown man comes near our house, we get scared,” said Shekhar Pujari, Praveen’s father.

SDPI has announced that it will field more than 100 candidates for the Karnataka elections. Party leaders said that the organization has acquired land in 19 districts due to various issues and released the first list of candidates in the month of January.
